THE IMMENSITY OF HIS LOVE

THE IMMENSITY OF HIS LOVE – Pastor Chris

“…that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:17-19).

The Apostle Paul, in the scripture above, uses a powerful imagery to describe the depth of the love of Christ. He speaks both in terms of biology and construction. He says that being rooted like a plant, and grounded like a building, we may be able to comprehend with all saints the immensity or incalculability of God’s love.

The word “comprehend” is translated from the Greek “katalambano,” which means to seize, capture, or take hold of something until it becomes fully yours; a revelation that you live in or live by. It means to gain a deep understanding that makes the matter become your matter or the message your message. How does this happen?

First, it’s important to grasp the original Greek terminologies used for knowledge in the verses we read; otherwise, it might seem tautological or even contradictory to say we can know something that surpasses or exceeds knowledge. So when it says to “‘know’ the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge,” the word “know” is the Greek “Ginosko,” while “knowledge” is from the Greek word “gnosis.”

“Ginosko” is revelation knowledge or knowledge by impartation. You can’t explain how you came to know what you know, but you just know. That’s why it’s called revelation knowledge. This aligns with what Jesus meant when He said, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

“Gnosis,” on the other hand, is knowledge acquired through erudition, the mental acquisition of information. So, the Bible tells us to “ginosko” the love of Christ; have revelation knowledge of the love of Christ; knowledge beyond reasoning. The vastness of Christ’s love can’t be unravelled by mental acquisition or mere reasoning.

This helps you understand when the Bible says in John 15:13, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” It beats logic and all human reasoning what Christ did for us, taking our place of sin and dying in our place. The Bible says in Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Think about that! No wonder the Spirit prays through Paul for the Church to come to the full comprehension and revelation of the immensity of the love of Christ. It’s love beyond limits and the realm of human comprehension. Glory to God!

          PRAYER

Dear Father, I’m rooted and grounded in your love, living in its fullness and living out its power in my life. Your love dwells in me richly, and I’m a conduit of this love to a hurting and dying world, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

FURTHER STUDY
1 John 4:9-10 NIV
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Philippians 1:9 NIV
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight

Romans 8:38-39
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
