Veni Veni Emmanuel!

image

It’s Christmas and as we celebrate, we mustn’t loose sight of the essence of the Season. We are commemorating the birth of our Lord and Saviour; Jesus Christ… the greatest gift of all.

Prophesying about His coming hundreds of years before, the Prophet Isaiah declared in Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

The birth of Jesus Christ was peculiar in so many ways; He was born of a Virgin (devoid of the sin nature), from the lineage of Abraham, heir to the throne of King David, a Priest in the order of Melchizedek and a sacrifice for sin.

Veni Veni Emmanuel (O Come O Come, Emmanuel) is a hymn for the Advent of Christ. Originally written in Latin in the 12th Century and translated to English in 1851 by John Mason Neale, it keeps us in the right frame of mind as we rejoice in anticipation of the second coming of Christ.

I serve you a special interpretation of this awesome hymn by Matthew Perryman Jones.

Enjoy:

Lyrics:

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who ordered all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
and teach us in her ways to go.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel!

O Come, O Come, Thou Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes on Sinai’s height
In ancient times didst give the law,
In cloud and majesty and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O Come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny
From depths of hell Thy people save;
And give then victory o’er the grave.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O Come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O Come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer,
Our spirits by Thine Advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O Come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Oh, bid our sad divisions cease,
And be yourself our King of Peace.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!
