Not being a career politician, it is likely that many would underestimate him but make no mistake about it, you would consider Dr. Alex Otti a lightweight at your own peril. Coming into the political terrain with an excellent track record in the private sector, he represents the emerging breed of technocrats that have rolled up their sleeves and delved into the murky waters of Nigerian politics in a bid to rescue their constituencies.
The current state of affairs in Abia gives credence to Chinua Achebe’s postulation in his book; “The trouble with Nigeria”. Endowed with enormous human and material resources, once littered with thriving industrial clusters, yet the challenge of leadership has undermined the huge potentials of this formerly vaunted territory.
Dr. Alex Otti’s decision to pursue his political ambition on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA); a party with huge support in the South East Zone, is proving to be a blessing in disguise. The failure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led Government to stem the declining fortunes of the State, in the midst of plenty, has left Abians disillusioned and eager to make the necessary changes for their State to get on the path of greatness. The emergence of Otti as the APGA flag bearer has coincided with this urgent drive for change from the status quo, to present a formidable front. That Otti is nobody’s stooge or lackey, is not lost on the electorate who are desperate for a man ready to buck the trend.
The immediate past Managing Director of Diamond Bank Limited is fired up for the task ahead and has the right profile and requisite character and experience to propel Abia to her maximum capacities. His clear goals and vision for the State would once more place Abia on a pedestal where investors would jostle for space in her business landscape.
His priorities and focus on the areas of; i. Education, ii. Agriculture and Rural Development, iii. Urban Renewal and Redevelopment, iv. Enterpreneurship, Industrialisation, and Unemployment, v. Healthcare, vi. Security, vii. Civil Service and viii. Local Government Councils, hits at the core of the issues that have bedeviled the State.
In his words, “I believe that Abia State is blessed because we have the resources both material and human, creative minds and entrepreneurs. What is required is a little support from government by way of creating the enabling environment and that is exactly what I have come to do for my state.’’
