Christmas experience with The Lagos City Chorale

Lagos City Chorale

Nigeria’s Multi International Award Winning Choir, The Lagos City Chorale, was at their brilliant best at “A Family Christmas Concert” hosted by Obi Adimora at his family home; Kedeozor Manor in Nanka, Anambra State.

The Concert, which held on the 26th of December 2015 and had in attendance Dr. Alex Ekwueme (GCON), Former Vice President Federal Republic of Nigeria as the Special Guest of Honour, made an abiding impression on me. Led by the Music Director/Conductor; Sir Emeka Nwokedi, the Lagos City Chorale lit up the concert hall in celebration of Christ’s birth as they delighted the audience with a splendid assemblage of special carols, classic pieces and indigenous chorale songs.

The Choir, touted as Nigeria’s cultural ambassador per excellence, was founded in February 1988 by the duo of Senator Lere Adesina (Late) and Sir Emeka Nwokedi and have over the years delivered very high standard performances at various local and international festivals/competitions. They recently won 3 Gold medals and a special award of honour at the 2nd European International Choir competition held in Magdeburg, Germany in July 2015.

The highlight of the evening was an encore of Jacques Arcadelt’s “Ave Maria” by the Choir as requested by the Special Guest of Honour and the piano recital of Beethoven’s Fur Elise and other pieces by the 7 year old Kambi Adimora, daughter of the Host. My favourite performance however was the excellent tenor rendition by Fred Asuquo Duke of the more familiar version of “Ave Maria” composed by Franz Schubert.

  1. Excellent is the word, wow what a display. I sure can try to imagine the exciting and yet soothing atmosphere in that hi ouse on the 26th.

  2. I was at Kedeozor manor Nanka for the carol, and it was a scintillating performance. It was a professional act,by the Lagos city choral, ably conducted by Sir Emeka Nwokedi, not withstanding the hectic road travel they had from Lagos to Nanka same day. With their laurels in international music events, they are truely Nigerian music ambassadors and a delight to all music lovers. It was also nice,to hear Sir Nwokedi pour encomium on my dad,Mr Michael M Okoye ”each beat”,for his great influence on his early musical development in high school.
